thanks Trace for the blog post below - however, Trace has encouraged me to do a little how to on the cake -
here's the disclaimer - i am no baker so i say this and it may sound a little cliched but if i can - anyone can!
what i have realised through my "fairy cake baking experience" is that all you need is to get started ....the idea's that make it simple ...so i give credit to "Cooper's grandmother" ..she is a lovely lady and the grandmother to a little friend of my son's from kinder....before i met her i really did not think i could pull this off ....
so i thought i would share this just in case you needed a starting point.....
firstly you will need:
a barbie - not an expensive barbie [i got mine for less the $10] - you may have one at home that looks "princess-ish" white icing - like the type used for christmas cakes - i bought mine from the supermarket [boxed and ready to go] fairy wings...2-dollar shops are a great source for picking up these sorts of bits & pieces 1/ Bake a cake in your pudding tin - I chose to use a chocolate cake rather then a sponge [well I love chocolate cake - oh and they seem to be a little more dense then the sponge cake and I thought it would make it easier to decorate]
2/ Prepare "Barbie" - not much involved here except that i had to "pull barbie's legs off" - they do come off by the way and i have managed to put them back. Get her dressed if you need to - I bought mine kind of ready to go so all i did was cut her dress and then used a piece of the cut-off bit for the sash!
3/Roll out white icing in a big circle - i used the instructions on the pack ...but basically it required me to roll out the white icing over a surface dusted with icing sugar [so you can lift it off the surface]. My hubby checked to see if it was going to be big enough [he did some circumference measures using a string and skewer].....we used a cookie cuter to make a small hole in the centre of our rolled out icing on where Barbie was going
4/Place rolled icing over chocolate cake - first you will need to brush the chocolate cake with a sugar syrup [i got the recipe for this from the back of the white icing pack]..... gently lift the rolled out white icing and place it over the cake...i needed help to do this [it takes two people]....once i dropped it over the cake i did not touch it ..however it fell is how i left it ...this gives the "dolls dress" a draped look. 5/Place Barbie in centre - scope out a little bit of the cake [deep enough to hold barbie] and place barbie inside cake. I tied a sash to cover the joins. 6/ Attach Fairy Wings
Enjoy
Sheena
Sheena has reported Katelyn's Tea Party was a huge smash. From the invitations to the cake. She's STILL gushing about how proud she is of her doll/fairy cake creation. I admit she has done a great job it does look beautiful (even if she didn't save me a bit!)
And the birthday girl looked the part as a gorgeous little fairy.
All in all it sounds like a great day enjoyed by all.
Happy crafting
Trace
we are in full flight with the party planning - i know it all seems very obsessive but its been really fun and its been great to create our cards and tags etc - hopefully we have given you some ideas along the way - also you will probably see that its actually not that difficult to get a really great look and they really don't take all the long to make!
we have finished the gift tags for the party bags and rather then fill the bags with sweets/lollies i have decided to organise some very cute cookies from a company called"Clever Little Cookies"
Anna our Clever Little Cookie creator is lovely and has been so flexible in helping me choose the cookies, colours etc. Once I get an image of my cookie - I will upload it for you - in the meantime check out their site
p.s.s products used to create the cards and tags are from the Rasberry Vintage Series - to be released very soon

As you can see I am getting a little carried away. As you know from previous blogs I am not very good at Birthday cakes...so why not jump in with both feet [ok one is hoping not to sink with this activity] but I have decided to make a "doll/fairy" cake for Katelyn's birthday. I have to give some [lots] credit to Cooper's grandmother [Cooper is a friend of Zach's from kinder and his grandmother Ann gave me some very handy tips on how to achieve this with flying colours].
My first task on this doll cake adventure is to get myself a "pudding cake tin" -[you know for the skirt of doll].. i also purchased a "barbie". Unfortunately, my house is not filled with such lovelies....so one did have to go out and buy one!!! Hey there's my pudding tin...well more later...

also I have to mention this blog or thing called alpha inventions...discovered my blog on it ..pretty cool tool...
Katelyn has always wanted a special tea party so we are busy organising it. We have decided to invite a "Fairy" to entertain our little friends [ages range from 4-6 yrs old]. Such "fairy assistance" is coming from our friends at Fairies of SouthYarra [a cute little store with all things fairy related].
Last week Trace was rather busy making invitations for this event. They look fantastic - you can see them below. I am putting together some more detailed instruction sheets on how to make them.
We've also made some cute little tags to go on the party bags. Here is a special one we made for Katelyn [the party girl].
These tags are so easy and can be used for any occasion.
Sheena & Trace
Hello all
Sheena and I have been busy creating gorgeous personalised party invitations for Sheena's daughter who will be 6 soon.
The Venice papers from our new vintage collections (coming soon) are perfect for cute girly invitations with floral designs, and pink, cream and brown tones. Sheena came up with a great idea of making little 3D 'fans' by folding a strip of paper into concertina fold for a cute look. You can also make full circles instead of fans. And of course no little girl's invites are complete without a little something extra- bling, buttons, brads, flowers etc. They are very easy to make, look so pretty and are very affordable.
I'm sure Kayelyn's little friends will be delighted to receive such a special invitation.
BUT WAIT... there's more! We've also made matching envelopes from the 'Petite' paper collection. Cute as huh?
Happing creating
